Located in an historic 1900’s Colorado Springs building, the Wyndham Mining Exchange is an excellent choice for downtown accommodations. You are within walking distance of abundant food and drink options, shops and lovely Acacia Park.

History

Wyndham Mining Exchange was built by Winfield Scott Stratton who made his millions during the Gold Rush. The Mining Exchange was built to secure gold riches from Cripple Creek and beyond. Miners and tycoons would come here to buy and sell gold, and it was somewhat of a landmark. At the time it was the only structure that reached over four stories. All the original gold vaults are still there, including the fabulous vault in the lobby.

The Lobby

The lobby at Wyndham Mining Exchange is grand. 1920’s styled furnishings paired with rustic leather couches and chairs, huge arched windows, and exposed pipes and brick combine antique and modern, giving a bit of an industrial vibe with strong character.

Look at this stunning seating area with a huge gold vault and floor to ceiling granite fireplace. It’s a great spot to sit during happy hour, on one of the comfortable leather couches.

Happy Hour

Wyndham Mining Exchange has a killer Happy Hour. I can’t believe what a great value it is. And the food is excellent. I’ll get to that later, but even if you are not staying here, it’s worth it to go for the Happy Hour and check out the beautiful lobby.

The Room

The first thing you see when you open the door are the huge arched windows and exposed brick. Heavy patterned curtains block out light, and the granite building does wonders to block out sound. A spacious granite desktop provides a nice workspace, plush bedding gives maximum comfort for a great night’s sleep.

The Bath

A large, double headed spa shower and granite countertops with undercount sink and separate WC make up the bathroom, which is spacious enough for two people to get ready for an evening out.

MX Spa

I’ve never had a spa treatment in a gold vault before, have you? What a fantastic atmosphere! MX Spa is award winning, and I can see why. I had the Golden Glow Signature Massage which was excellent. I loved the ambiance and my therapist was A+. Locals enjoy this spa and it would be well worth a visit even if you don’t stay at the hotel.

Springs Orleans

The hotel’s restaurant, Springs Orleans, like the spa, is award winning and wonderful. It has a New Orleans theme and boy do they deliver.

New Orleans used to be an old stomping ground back in the day and I know it well. Springs Orleans does a great job of capturing NOLA ambiance and the essence of the food.

Copper embossed ceiling tiles. a cozy courtyard, and a Rodriguez Blue Dog print all felt like a familiar friend and reminded me how much I like New Orleans. The aromas of blackened food and jambalaya in the air, the smell of beignets–it brought back good memories.

The courtyard is dreamy. It was raining when we had our dinner, or we would have sat outside, but we still got to see how beautiful it is, and for me the rain just added to the feeling of being in New Orleans.

What a menu. Everything we had was delicious. I mean DELICIOUS. We tired the Fried Alligator (yummy), Cajun Caesar Salad, Blackened Shrimp, and three desserts. The beignets are every bit as good as beignets straight out of Cafe Du Monde. Light and fluffy and delicious with a cup of Cafe Au Lait. We also had Pecan and Key Lime Pie, and they both hit it out of the park. Everything was fresh, home made and perfect. They serve Abita beer which I haven’t had in years (I like the Purple Haze), but I did get a taste of the famous Hurricane cocktail, and though it was too strong for me alcohol-wise, it tasted fantastic with strong flavors of Passion Fruit. Just like I remembered, only better. It really transported me back to New Orleans, it was such a treat.

The Location

The Wyndham Mining Exchange is in an excellent location for enjoying downtown Colorado Springs and beyond. It’s just a block or so from Tejon Street, which is fun to meander around window shopping. The area felt safe and we walked around at night comfortably without concern. The Wyndham Mining Exchange is dog friendly, and with the park and dog-friendly shops, it works great for those traveling with canine family members.

The Mining Exchange is next door to a very cool vintage movie theatre called Kimball’s. We really wanted to pop in for a movie, but we didn’t have time. Next door to the movie theater is a cute icecream place with colorful Adirondack chairs on the patio.
