Zurich West
Quirky Zurich West is the former industrial section of the city that is brimming with character and funky eclectic color. Located between the Limmat River and Bahnhof, this neighborhood is easy to get to and easy to navigate. In Zurich West you see street art, cool shops filled with unique goods and feel the pulse of creativity happening around you. It’s the artsy district with galleries, cafes, and ateliers. It’s edgy. And fun. Zurich West is also a great place to grab a bite to eat.
Im Viaduct
Here you will find indie designer clothing, local crafts, antiques, art studios, and the popular Japanese shop SuperDry. It’s a kaleidoscope of cool stuff set in beautiful industrial architecture. I fell in love with a bright orange juicer and have been lusting after it ever since. Apparently they will become available in the US this fall (I’ll keep you posted if I see them). Another thing that caught my eye in a big way was a shop that offered old airline server carts and paraphernalia.
Markthalle
The Markthalle is an indoor Farmers’ Market with a variety of food stalls and cozy communal atmosphere. Fresh local cheese, breads, organic produce, and an assortment of specialty foods are perfect for grabbing to enjoy on an urban picnic, or you can eat right there at one of the tables.
Freitag
Truckspotting anyone? Housed in re-purposed shipping containers, Zurich’s iconic local brand, Freitag, crafts messenger bags, wallets, and totes from recycled truck tarps. You can get a great view from their observation deck upstairs. This is Freitag’s flagship store, so if you’re a fan, you won’t want to miss it.
Clouds
Located in Zurich’s tallest building, the Prime Tower, Clouds is a restaurant-bar-bistro that offers a spectacular birds eye view of the city, all the way to the Alps. You can read more about my experience at Clouds here.
If you’re in Zurich, be sure to head to Zurich West for some local color, cheeky goods, Swiss food, and an edgy, artful atmosphere.
