The Canyon Suites in Scottsdale, Arizona, is a Five Star-Five Diamond resort at the base of Camelback Mountain. It’s more of a resort within a resort on the grounds of the Phoenician, a palatial Luxury Collection Resort.
Lobby & Grounds
The lobby is grand and elegant. In the evenings, they have wine tasting and in the morning, you’ll find coffee and tea. Mid-day they offer tea and cookies. Check in is comfortable, you sit at the desk with a friendly concierge that is dedicated to the Canyon Suites, and you have access to their service and expertise 24/7. Grounds are tranquil, immaculately groomed and delightfully chock full of road runners and bunnies.
The Pool
I fell in love with the pool at The Canyon Suites and could not get enough of it. It’s small and intimate, but large enough to swim laps. It was serene and uncrowded and probably one of the most peaceful pools I’ve ever enjoyed at a hotel. It has a gorgeous backdrop of Camelback Mountain, boulders, and saguaro cacti dotting the terrain like calm guardians. Bright yellow cabanas make the ideal hangout for a day of pool time bliss. Pool attendants make sure you have what you need at all times and the cheery luxe cabanas come with snacks and drinks, indoor-outdoor seating and a full bathroom.
Because of the scaled-down size of the Canyon Suites, it’s not a long hike to get to the pool. This encouraged me to visit in the day and also at night. There was a full moon during our stay and the palm trees were lit up. The nocturnal experience was just as wonderful as in the day, maybe even more so.
This pool is the perfect temperature. Not always the case! As hot as it is in Arizona, I’ve been to hotels with freezing cold pools, but this one was heated to perfection. While staying at the Canyon Suites, you do have access to the huge pools at the Phoenician, and there is a fabulous waterslide and a beautiful million dollar mother of pearl tiled pool there. But we were so happy where we were, we didn’t want to go anywhere else.
The Living Room
We had a sweeping view of mountains and the flight path, so we got to watch planes coming in and out of PHX (but no noise). In keeping with the serene vibe of the place, the color scheme was blue, creme and green accented with dark wood furniture. A dining area and balcony offer more seating in addition to the sofa and chairs. A large desk and fax machine offer a nice work area facing the big window.
The Bedroom
We slept peacefully at the Canyon Suites. It was quiet and comfortable. There is a large flat screen tv in the bedroom as well as the living room, which is nice for kids that need quiet time with cartoon network. It’s also great to have that separate room if you are traveling with a family as there is plenty of room for each person to have some separate space.
Dog Friendly
When you arrive to your suite with the pooch, you will find a dog bed, treats, and bowls. Everywhere we went on the grounds, the dog was greeted warmly and we felt totally comfortable and welcome. It’s nice to walk around the lovely grounds with your dog and enjoy the varieties of cactus, waterfalls, fountains and palms.
Depending on how fancy you want to get, there are pet concierge services which include room service for dogs and even canine massage.
Our dog is a chihuahua, and she loves the sunshine. Arizona’s climate was perfect for her and she hung out in total dog-bliss. Scottsdale is a super dog friendly city, so if you are thinking of bringing along any canine family members I would encourage it. It’s so much more fun to have your dog with you while you’re traveling.
The Food
There are multiple food options on the grounds. We tried Relish and J & G Steakhouse. Relish Burger Bistro is famous for burgers, beer, and tequila. My son went bananas for the burger and milkshake made with delicious local artisan ice cream. Relish has wonderful Prickly Pear Margaritas and Veggie Burgers too. They come with Tater Tots served in cute little fry baskets. Everything we tried was excellent.
J & G Steakhouse is a Jean-Georges Vongerichten creation and award winning restaurant. If you’ve eaten at a Jean-George restaurant before, you will recognize the Asian influence and signature use of certain ingredients like ginger and black truffle.
We shared lobster and an iceberg wedge salad and it was great, but the best part was dining alfresco with amazing views of the city. We got to see a pink and orange sunset and watch planes coming and going. It was gorgeous.
Canyon Suites Bottom Line
The Canyon Suites are centrally located near Old Towne and the airport which makes it super convenient and desirable. Amenities like a full service spa, Kid’s Club, and golf are just a few things offered to guests. We were there two nights and sampled a tiny fraction of what is available.
This is one of the most peaceful hotels I have ever stayed at. This level of serenity is extremely nourishing. I felt revived here, replenished. My batteries were charged and I left feeling rejuvenated (and sad to go). The ambiance was beautiful, the food was delicious, the staff was wonderful–from start to finish it was a perfect expeirence.
