If you’ve been following me on social media, you know that lately I’ve been obsessed with making my own brick oven pizza. There are no decent pizza places where I live and after a recent Denver trip, where the pizza was amazing, I realized I was sorely lacking my favorite food in my life. When I discovered I could make pizzeria quality pizza at home, I was ecstatic. Enter the CampChef Italia Artisan Pizza Oven.Isn’t it beautiful? I love the stainless steel and that it looks so professional. I put it together quickly, it’s intuitive and I only looked at the directions at the end to make sure I did everything right, it takes about five minutes, you just attach the handle and put everything in place.
We had great success on our first try. We made a Margherita Pizza and a Veggie pizza with broccoli and heirloom tomatoes. I love being able to control the quality of the ingredients, using fresh organic produce and cheeses. We’ve been defaulting to Trader Joe’s pre-made pizza dough (seriously, it’s excellent and costs under two dollars) and keep it in the fridge ready to go at all times. I did get some premium 00 flour to make my own dough at some point.
This is how the first pies turned out. Aren’t they gorgeous? I can’t tell you how exciting it is to me to be able to make these at home with very little effort. This is a family friendly project that kids love. My son makes professional grade pies now at twelve. It’s really fun to watch him come up with different creations and see the pride on his face when a perfect pizza comes out. Obviously this is an adult supervised activity–the oven is very hot, reaching temps up to 700 degrees.
You need some peels and a pizza cutter. CampChef’s Pizza Kit is perfect to go with the oven. They use a slightly different method with a more spatula-like metal peel to help place the uncooked pizzas in the oven from the wood peels. Then you use it to remove the cooked pies. It works great. I like the idea of sliding the uncooked pizza with the spatula–sometimes they need a little push. This kit includes two wooden peels which is great for making multiple pies. More than one person can be making their pizza. It goes really fast and it’s nice to have that extra peel. I’ve always wanted to try a rocking styled pizza cutter–it works like a charm. I’d also recommend this cover for your oven to help protect it from the elements.
The CampChef Italia Artisan Pizza Oven holds two pizzas. It doesn’t take long at all to cook a pizza, so I recommend staying with it the whole time. We’re talking five minutes tops. You can use the spatula to turn the pizza if necessary, to achieve even browning on the crust. This bad boy will churn out pizza after pizza and it’s so fun to make several varieties and see how they all come out. Imagine a summer of patio pizza parties!
The Italia runs on propane, and right now we have ours on our deck connected to a 20lb propane tank. It’s as simple as turning on the gas, then the oven. It’s fully adjustable so you can control the flame. It heats up right away and within a few minutes, it’s ready to go. This oven is portable. It is heavy though–I wouldn’t want to try to move it around with the stone inside it all by myself. You can tailgate with this or take it camping. It also runs on the small 2lb propane tanks which helps with portability. If you love pizza, you need an outdoor pizza oven and this is an excellent option.
